TES 2009: Red Cross to showcase new teaching resources for the changing national curriculum The British Red Cross will next month (October 2009) showcase a variety of new resources for Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship at the TES Education show in London on 2 – 3 October 2009. The First Aid and Humanitarian education resources are geared to equip teachers with effective tools and skills for the changing national curriculum.
“We know teachers are looking for extra support to deliver these subjects in the classroom. There are indications of changes in the national curriculum in the next few years which may further pose challenges, particularly if teachers don’t have prior knowledge of citizenship education and first aid. Our resources will give teachers confidence and a solid grasp of these complex issues so they can lead effective and engaging classes,” says Christine Boase, the British Red Cross first aid education officer.
One new resource which looks at swine flu is available free on the education pages of the Red Cross website: redcross.org.uk/education. It is a photo based version of the fortnightly news think! which is approaching its fifth year of providing succinct news items and challenging discussion ideas. Subscription for news think! is free at redcross.org.uk/signup
Christine will be speaking on the Healthy Schools stage on the new approach the Red Cross is taking to first aid education, which is currently on the PSHE curriculum expected to become statutory in 2011. She will also demonstrate the award winning Life. Live it. (LLI) First aid education kit, and show how easy it is to teach basic first aid. Those attending TES 2009 can visit the Red Cross stand to enter a prize draw for a free LLI kit.
The LLI first aid education kit includes an interactive CD-ROM containing ten flexible lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, video and audio clips and music-festival themed quiz, as well as practical materials. Including comprehensive guidance for teachers, it has been specially designed for use by all educators, even those with no previous first aid experience.
“Another new resource we are also producing for citizenship teachers in partnership with the international law firm Allen and Overy is based on the theme of fairness and justice in conflict situations, in local and global contexts,” Christine added. “It covers the International Humanitarian Law aspects of the revised curriculum and all of the new GCSE examination specifications."

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
In the event that we raise more money than can be reasonably and efficiently spent, any surplus funds will be used to help us prepare for and respond to other humanitarian disasters either overseas or here in the UK. For more information, visit redcross.org.uk
