The Walk to School campaign is run by national charity Living Streets, and already reaches over 2 million children each year.
Walk to School is a national campaign which has existed since 1995. Its aim is simple – to encourage all parents and children to make walking to school part of their daily routine.
Walking to school has a wide range of benefits:
it keeps children healthy it reduces traffic on the roads and congestion and pollution at the school gate it reduces emissions of carbon dioxide it provides quality time before school for parents and children it is an opportunity for children to play before school it helps engage children in their local communities and environments
It also often takes less time than driving, to the amazement of many parents!
The Walk to School campaign comprises two awareness events (Walk to School Week in May, and Walk to School Month, October) and a year-round walking promotion scheme called Walk Once a Week (WoW). For all of these, Living Streets produces a new set of resources (posters, leaflets, wallcharts, banners) each year around a particular theme.
For 2009, the Walk to School Week theme was ‘Walk’n’Talk’ which looked at the social side of walking to school. For the academic year 2009/10 the theme for the WoW scheme is ‘Nature in the UK’.
October 2009 is Walk to School Month and, concentrating on the health aspect of walking to school, the theme is ‘Count me in’. The focus is on measuring the walk to school, and demonstrating how easy it is to reach the recommended daily 60 minutes of moderate physical activity when walking to school is included.
